Objective: Find Artist and lyrics in pages 191-275.

How does the music shape who she is in terms in of what she deals with?

Raquel Cepeda uses musical references to explain specific conscious moments in her life. Cepeda introduces quotes from songs displaying her gravitational pull towards music as a mean of further communication with her readers. If you noticed throughout her memoir she places these quotes or music artist precisely when producing a description, a point or conveying a metaphor. This style allows Cepeda to make sense of her world. In Cepeda’s case, the musical genre Hip- Hop serves as her medium to her past, present and future. - Austin Cabrera

    Sample question,
Example: (Number) >(Your Response) > Raquel is a literary master of memoirs - (Your Name)

    2. Raquel uses music as a way of projecting how she feels or even the trials she goes through. The quote by Ad-Rock "New York taught me everything, New York City is everything" is a way of giving credit to the city for helping to make her tough. Her mother didn't raise her, so she gives credit to New York for helping to shape her. But in general, music is an expression of our emotions, and she chose great, influential artists as a way for that expression. These artists paved the way for future musicians and helped us dig in deep to our core to express how we feel when we hear them. - Ivan Forero

    3. Raquel uses the influence of music to overcome the hard time she had while growing up, she describes how all of the artists she mentioned in the book, help her in the way of building up her strength. Music is the way to accept and even relate to the lyrics, in this case Cepeda shows how important the music is during the course of her life, how it made her gain confidence, her identity and how clearly music is the reflection of her feelings. -Maria Luna.

    4. Music shaped Raquel's identity in being able to identify her struggles with the themes presented in the music. Hip-Hop was a major factor in shaping Raquel's identity in its authenticity in speaking to her soul. Hip-Hop gave her the strength to preserver through the chaos that was her life. -Karina Batista

    5. Raquel was also inspires by music in her lifetime, she uses music as a tool to overcome her struggles in life. She mentions a lot of sons in the book that have a good connection with her teenage life, she connected her obstacles with the music, To solve her problems. Music was a mother to her since she did not have a mother in her life to be there for her. Fatmata

    6. Raquel uses music to talk about how she feels and the experiences that she goes through. She also uses music to overcome her feels; especially her abusive past. In the book she describes how all of the songs that she listens to give her strength to overcome past and future obstacles. She talks about how Hip hop and New York City shaped her life and she gives no credit to her mother; for the way she was raised. -Tomasz Jedrak

    7. Raquel uses the music as a way to express her emotions and also motivates her to keep strong. The rhythm of the music reminds her of all the struggles that latinos and blacks are facing every day. Latinos and blacks don’t have equal opportunities to learn how to express and communicate with each other. Raquel believes that we should all be united because we are all related by our ancestors, language and tradition, instead of being together we judge each other based based on our race and color.Music for Raquel represents the culture and traditions of all blacks and latinos. Brenda Castillo

8.The music shaped has shaped Raquel in who she is. I could in a sense relate to Raquel becomes she uses the lyric in the music as a way her life is. Many people use music as a way of expressing themselves and connecting themselves like Raquel does. The type of music she hears gives Raquel a sense of escaping reality for a moment and just concentrating on herself. Raquel hears music from her culture and her Latina roots. When she hears them she takes every lyrics and puts herself into them pretending she’s the one singing it. The music inspires her in way as well. It gives her hope and the ability to never give up. Stephanie Remache
